I heard sula wines from nasik outsources the grapes cultivation to individual grape farmers. I am from nasik but born and broughtup in mumbai. Now i am thinking of downshifting to nasik ond get into farming. I been in media for almost 12 yrs, Now me and my family is bored of stressful urbanlife. Can someone give me any information relating to my plan?

Good thinking. Horticulture in India is becoming very lucrative; it has great potentials including grapes - both for wine and table-top variety. Essentially you need to learn to become a grape grower. You will need land which has good air drainage, good soil drainage, and the right kind of soil. You will need to prepare the soil, select the right kind of seeds to plant and then manage the planted vine yard. It would be a good idea to contact the Mahagrapes producer societies located at Sangli, Pune, Nashik etc. to know more about standards, good agricultural practises (GAP), post-harvest handling, export potentials etc. etc. They have a website: www.mahagrapes.com
Some of the grape grower cooperatives in Nashik are:
Baglan Taluka Grape Growers Cooperative Society Ltd.
Mogi Grape Growers Co-op. Society. You will get lots of practical information from these people.
You may also like to contact Maharashtra State Agriculture Marketing Board. They have offices in Pune and elsewhere. They can also help you.
